Science
Why we teach Science
"The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing." – Albert Einstein
At Boasley Cross Primary School, our Science curriculum nurtures children’s natural curiosity about the world around them and develops their understanding of the scientific knowledge, skills and processes needed to make sense of it. Through practical investigation, exploration and enquiry, pupils are encouraged to ask questions, make predictions, test ideas and draw conclusions from evidence.
Using the United Curriculum, children build their scientific knowledge progressively across Biology, Chemistry and Physics. They develop an understanding of key concepts such as living things, materials, forces, energy, Earth and space, and how scientific ideas connect and develop over time. The curriculum is carefully sequenced to help pupils know more, remember more and make meaningful links between different areas of science.
How we teach Science
What we want children to learn
Our curriculum is built around developing scientific understanding through:
- Working Scientifically – asking questions, observing closely, carrying out investigations, gathering evidence and communicating findings.
- Building Scientific Knowledge – developing a secure understanding of biology, chemistry and physics concepts through a carefully planned progression of learning.
- Making Connections – recognising patterns, applying knowledge to new situations and understanding how science helps us to explain and improve the world around us.
Our school values are embedded throughout science learning:
-
Respectful – Children learn to respect the natural world and understand their role as global citizens. Through studying habitats, ecosystems, environmental change and sustainability, they develop an appreciation of the interdependence of living things and the importance of caring for our planet.
-
Resourceful – Pupils learn to think critically, solve problems and use evidence to answer questions. They develop the confidence to investigate independently, select appropriate methods and adapt their thinking when results challenge their expectations. Science encourages creativity, innovation and a willingness to explore new ideas.
-
Resilient – Scientific enquiry teaches children that learning often involves testing, refining and improving ideas. Pupils learn that mistakes and unexpected results are valuable opportunities for deeper understanding. They develop perseverance, determination and confidence when faced with challenges.
Our rural setting provides rich opportunities for children to experience science first-hand. Through outdoor learning, observation of seasonal change, work on habitats and living things, and exploration of the local environment, pupils develop a strong understanding of the world immediately around them while making connections to wider global scientific issues.
By the time they leave Boasley Cross, our children will be inquisitive, knowledgeable and confident scientists. They will have developed the skills to question, investigate and think critically, alongside a sense of wonder about the world and an understanding of how science shapes our lives, our future and our society.
